Pink Run invites medical students

Thursday, September 15, 2016

Organizers of the upcoming 10th Pink Run are encouraging medical students in Cebu to join the race so they can help strengthen awareness about breast cancer.
The running event is slated Oct. 12 starting at the Terraces area of the Ayala Center Cebu at the Cebu Business Park.

For the first time in its 10-year existence, the organizers from the Philippine Society of General Surgeons-Cebu and Eastern Visayas Chapter (PSGS-CEV) will be asking medical students from various schools in Cebu to take part in the annual running event, which is one of the highlights of the monthlong celebration of the “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in October.

Dr. Peter Mancao, the running event’s chairman, said that they need the help of medical students to gain strength in their crusade against breast cancer.

According to Dr. Ron del Mar, one of the organizers, they are very happy about the increasing number of women who are more aware about breast cancer and have already done examinations for early detection of breast cancer.

“The cases of breast cancer increased, but its not taken negatively because it means that more and more women are aware about the importance of early detection because this disease is curable and can be stopped in a very early stage,” Del Mar said in a press conference at the Casino Español yesterday. “Spreading awareness about this disease to the community through events like the Pink October Run is very helpful.”

Joining Mancao and Del Mar were PSGS-CEV secretary Malin Operto and PSGS-CEV President Sander Ugalino.

The running event will have 12-kilometer, 6k and 3k distances. Registration fee is P400 inclusive of a race shirt.

There will be a medical students category, which has a distance of 6k. There will also be a 6k Rotarians category along with a five-man group run in the 3k distance.

No cash prizes will be given to winners of this running event for a cause.

Registration starts Oct. 1 at the Active Zone of the Ayala Center Cebu. (CEBU DAILY NEWS)
